TIPS TO RAISE FUNDS: Vision Before Provision
Vision Before Provision
“Write the vision, and make it plain… that he may run who reads it.”
– Haggai 2 / Habakkuk 2:2
When it comes to accessing Christian grants or securing grant funding in England, many churches and ministries understandably focus first on the provision. After all, resources are needed to carry out the work. But here’s the truth most experienced funders will tell you: provision follows vision.
At Faithful Funding, we often hear the question: “Should we apply for funding even if we’re not 100% sure on the plan?” Our answer is always the same
Vision comes first.

Why Vision First?
Nearly all Christian funders will want to see a clear, focused vision before they consider releasing any financial support. This isn’t to be difficult. It’s because funders want to invest in purpose. They need to know what your ministry is about, what issue you're tackling, and how you plan to bring transformation through your work.
The Bible reminds us plainly in Haggai and again in Habakkuk : write the vision. Make it clear. Make it simple. Don’t try to solve every problem under the sun. Find your lane, and run in it.
Avoiding the Trap of Over complication
In today’s climate, it’s easy for churches and Christian projects to feel pressured to address every societal issue poverty, mental health, climate, youth, justice, community cohesion... the list goes on. But attempting to meet every need often results in unclear messaging and scattered focus.
The truth is, funders fund clarity. When your vision is focused, measurable and God breathed, it’s much easier to build a compelling funding application. Remember, a well written vision can open doors not just for finance, but for favour, partnerships, and influence.
What Does “Making It Plain” Look Like?
Making your vision plain doesn’t mean watering it down. It means expressing it in a way that anyone can understand. Avoid jargon. Be realistic. Be prayerful. And most importantly, be bold in your belief that God will provide once the vision is clear.
